Bermuda Health Conditions

PAGE DEINDEXED
Below I have described the general health conditions of Bermudians that was published in a recent report. The study covered 31 countries of the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OEDC) and included countries like Japan, Australia, the U.S., Canada, Norway and Switzerland also.

This health report, that analyzed 76 health parameters, clearly indicates the pervasive problems faced by the islanders and also the areas where Bermuda is doing much better that many other developed countries in the world.

Here are some of the key findings:

  • The average life expectancy in Bermuda is 79. In general, Bermudians spend more on healthcare annually compared to any other country (except U.S). But in terms of life-expectancy the island is 23rd out of the 31 countries in OECD;
  •
  • Obesity is a major problem in Bermuda. About 20% of the islanders are overweight or obese;
  •
  • Bermudians seem to be finding more meaning to life compared to many other countries. This is indicated by the fact that Bermuda had the lowest suicide rate of all the countries profiled in the report;
  •
  • The chances of getting killed in a road accident in Bermuda is more than in any other country. Death rate from road accidents in Bermuda is about 28 cases per every 100,000 people, and this is almost three times the international average;
  •
  • Bermuda has the highest rate of diabetes.
  •
  • Death rate out of prostrate cancer is the highest in Bermuda. However, the island is the best fighter when it comes to breast cancer;
  •

  • Smoking in Bermuda has come down significantly. There are fewer Bermudians who smoke cigarettes on a daily basis than any other developed country;
  •
  • Almost all the Bermudians (94%) need to visit doctors at least once in a year and half of them need a specialist consultant. Vast majority of the Bermuda population (89%) say that their medical needs are being met in the island which speaks about the quality of medical services available in Bermuda.
  •
  • Bermuda has one of the lowest cases requiring MRI exams, behind only U.S. However, the asthma cases in Bermuda is quite high and number of people in Bermuda who are admitted to hospital because of asthma is about twice the global average.
