Comfort Suites
Paradise Island, Bahamas

Category: Mid-Range

Comfort Suites is right next to the Atlantis Complex in Paradise Island to which it is an affiliate partner. That the guests of Comfort Suites can easily access all the features and amenities of the Atlantis is a major selling point for them… so much so that the Comfort official website headline speaks brightly of this facility first!! That apart, Comfort Suites is quite well known in its own right and the 223 suites in the hotel have flat screen TV sets, free Wifi and complimentary hot breakfast.

This is primarily projected as a family friendly comfortable medium range hotel that can suit most pockets. The grounds are landscaped in a pretty way and there is a swim up bar and outdoor pool in the hotel where guests can laze around and sip on cocktails.

The location is great as Marina Village, main market, Atlantis, Paradise Island ferry dock and public beaches are all nearby. You can mostly walk to all important places and save on cab fare.

By the way, you will receive little cute pink cards when you check in to the hotel and these are very important. The cards will be checked almost everywhere you go so carry them in your wallet. The same goes true for the Atlantis wristband which will be religiously checked.

The rooms are divided into two kinds; either they have two double beds or 1 king sized bed. There is a pleasantly furbished sitting area with sofa bed, desk and chair. The bedroom and sitting area are both simply decorated in predominantly white tones with coffee brown upholstery, duvets and furnishings giving the whole place an urbane yet homely look.

At the Comfort Suites, the major driving point seems to be that it’s right next to Atlantis and has full access to the later. It’s rather interesting how the room prices vary according to the proximity to Atlantis. Rooms in the building containing the front desk are the most affordable since they are the furthest from Atlantis. Though the rooms are quite decently sized and offer value for money if you just consider the tariff there are lots of hidden charges. You have to read the fine print carefully to know about utilities, surcharges, compulsory maid gratuities etc. and so don’t hesitate in asking away your doubts before you actually check in. also remember, that the rules have been changed recently and now guests have to purchase access wrist bands to get inside Atlantis. The rates and other details for this has to be confirmed from the official website of Comfort Suites.

Dining

Crusoe’s
The in house restaurant of Comfort Suites and it serves tropical dishes like house specialty Caribbean jerk Turkey, Abaco Conch Chowder etc. apart from conventional comfort food like salads, sandwiches and wraps. You need to keep track of the lunch and dinner hours which are pretty much fixed. Lunch is available between 12.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. while dinner is served between 5.30 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.

The In house swim up bar is basically meant for guests who love to laze around in the pool the whole day. Titled Crusoe’s Swim Up Bar, this place is adjacent to the outdoor swimming pool and it serves a good range of drinks, cocktails etc. from 11.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. By the way, the pool offers the opportunity to laze around till evening in the water which is not the case with Atlantis swimming pools. Happy hours at the Swim Up pool bar is between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Bamboo lounge is a smallish lounge that’s situated off the main lobby. It’s okay for relaxing here if you are not venturing out of the hotel in the evening. The lounge is open from 4.00 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. and has sleek white themed décor. However, one can easily think of half a dozen better looking lounges next door in the huge Atlantis complex so the Bamboo lounge remains underutilized.

The complimentary hot breakfast is quite decent with eggs, milk, yogurt, a selection of fruits and cold cuts. Children love the flavored waffles (you get to choose the flavor). Depending on the day’s menu you will get a choice between bacon, sausage and corn beef hash. If you happen to go out really early, then the hotel provides a packaged breakfast hamper creatively titled “your suite Success Grab and Go bag”. You can choose to have your breakfast either in Crusoe’s or in the freshly revamped Garden restaurant.

Any food that you order in or sample in the hotel has Vat and a steep service charge that’s extra and quite misleadingly…. not mentioned in the menu.

If you intend to splurge then you can visit any of the fancy Atlantis restaurants. There are other options nearby like Starbucks and Jimmy Buffets Margaretville which offer a range of drinks and good menu options.

Food prices in the in-house options at comfort suites are more affordable if you compare them with Atlantis. However, prices are still high as that’s the standard in Nassau Paradise Island zone.

If you are on a budget then there are ways in which you can reduce your food bills. You can order in food from nearby affordable restaurants like the Double Dragon, and pick up bottled water,  soda, soft drinks etc. from convenience stores that are right opposite the street. Dunkin Donuts is right next door and that can be great thing for kids. While visiting Atlantis, you can carry your own snacks, beer bottles and drinks…. Atlantis allows outside food in select zones.

Other Facilities

Unlike Atlantis, Comfort Suites is quite small in scale and doesn’t really offer its own bouquet of water sports or sight-seeing opportunities. However guests have all popular tourist activities in easy reach right from exploration of historical sites in Downtown Nassau to Marina Village Shopping to a round of beach ball in the neighboring beaches and to exploring the great Aquaventure next door.

You can go snorkeling right there on the beach provided you arrange for your own snorkeling equipment. As a guest of Comfort Suites you get access to the private beaches of Atlantis.

All entertainment facilities of the Atlantis like Casino, Aquaventure, Water Sports hub, pools (selected ones), restaurants, clubs, pubs, bars, movie theater, shopping centers etc. can be accessed by the Comfort suites guests when they wear the access wristband.

Post 31st October 2017, Children under 12 years of age can stay free (2 kids per room). Kids can also access all Atlantis properties including the famous water park for free. For every adult who pays proper meal fees, one kid gets to dine free. This is really a good offer considering the fact that breakfast is already complimentary for everyone.

Comfort Suites arranges wedding planning services that encompass everything from rehearsal dinner to the actual wedding to floral decorations, airport transfers, catering, photography and paperwork. There are other special packages for honeymoons and vow renewals.

Business travelers can access business facilities that include copy and fax services, boardroom (can accommodate 10 people), wireless internet etc. the Pool deck area can be booked in the evenings for relaxed functions and audio visual equipment, photographers, catering etc. can be arranged by Comfort suites management on prior notice.

Overall opinion

In itself the facilities offered in Comfort Suites is nothing extraordinary in its category but the hotel becomes an attractive proposition when you consider several other factors. The rooms are priced at about half the rate of Atlantis and yet you get access to all of Atlantis facilities. You also get free breakfast and your kids will get to stay and eat for free post October 2017. You will of course, have to walk for some time to cover all attractions of Atlantis but the Coral Tower is just an odd 150 steps away. The access to Atlantis water park Aquaventure makes it worth the deal and so the hotel is a good option in the medium range category. The location remains an added bonus… its convenient to be able to walk to Marina Village post dinner for your daily fix of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

The behavior of the staff including the bellboys, manager, waiters etc. is great and they will make you overlook the rather glaring lack of maintenance in some areas. Sometimes air conditioners in rooms do not work properly and you may notice an odd lizard popping up in places but the staff are mostly eager to help.

The performance of in-room wi-fi is questionable as it does not seem to work equally well in all floors.
Most of the restaurants and bars in and around Comfort premises including Atlantis are cashless so you need to carry your credit card and a valid photo ID everywhere to avail services. You can access all areas of Atlantis using your access wristband apart from the gym. Neither does the Comfort Suites have its own gym so if you are a hardcore gym addict that’s a disadvantage.

How to reach

Comfort Suites is in Paradise Island that’s connected to Nassau via bridges. The hotel is right next to the Coral Towers in Atlantis. It will take you approximately 30 minutes to reach Comfort Suites from Nassau International Airport.

Unlike hotels in the Atlantis, Comfort Suites does not have its own shuttle service. You need to pay for your taxi ride from the airport but its easy to get a shared taxi. Try reaching the hotel before 4 p.m. as the desk closes sharp at this time and then you will have to visit the desk again next morning for collecting your pink card, access bracelet and property map.
