Sunflower Guesthouse Bermuda

Category: $  Location: Pembroke, Hamilton

UPDATE: The property has closed down.

This small guesthouse with two independent studios for guests with separate private entrances is also the home of Tricia, the owner who fondly runs and manages this cute little property. She lives here with her husband and son, and there are a three cats as well. The building with its pastel yellow paint with white slanted roof looks very appealing.

So what's the big deal about this guest house? I think the first and the main positive has to be its location. It's located at the western edge of Hamilton City and only 5 minutes walk to the Ferry terminal and less than 10 minutes walk to the main bus terminal. So if you plan to get around the island and visit places, there can't be a better location to avail both buses and ferries.

Plenty of great restaurants are all within walking distance. Pubs like Robin Hood and restaurants like Mad Hatters are within 5 minutes walk. And Front Street which is the main area for shops, bars and restaurants is only 5 minutes walk.

And where else will you find such a budget accommodation in a place like Hamilton City which is the main commercial hub and capital of Bermuda. In fact sunflower would be amongst the cheapest that you can get in the island. The rate here includes all taxes and surcharges.

Now coming to the rooms ... there are two studios in the property, one in the ground floor which is bigger and the other one upstairs. The two are rented out separately. Both have independent entries, so your privacy is ensured. Both studios have a bathroom with shower each and a kitchenette equipped with microwave oven, toaster, tea/coffee maker, fridge and full set of crockery and cutlery.

However there is no sink or cooker in the kitchen. So if you plan to cook yourself, you can use the BBQ gas oven in the garden. The popular grocery store Miles Market is only 3 minutes walk from here. You will get hot snacks and deli food there as well.

Both studios are clean. Tricia pays a lot of attention to the details. But this is by no means a luxury accommodation. After all this is a budget lodging. Both rooms have Queen size bed each. The ground floor room has an additional couch which can open up as a bed and therefore can sleep a third person or two children. The bed sheets are clean and soft.

The rooms have TVs but no cable channels. You will get local channels only. However there is an in-house  DVD library with nice collections. You can get any number of DVDs and watch them on your television. The rooms also have a small table and chair. Tricia also provides snorkel gear and beach towels (large ones). However there is no beach within walking distance. Elbow Beach in Paget is about 10 minutes drive and Clarence Cove in Pembroke on north shore is about 5 minutes by taxi.

Another great feature of the guesthouse is its free, secured and high speed wi-fi internet. This really comes very handy for those who come for business. Other amenities include small amounts of free tea, coffee, sugar provided in the rooms, toiletries for bathroom, pre-paid cell phone made available for making local or international calls ... you just need to pay for the usage. What more .. there is also a small garden in the property with table and chairs which can be used by the guests.

There is no food served in Sunflower. However you can always walk across and have your food at any nearby restaurants. Or alternatively stuff your fridge with fruits, bread and butter, snacks available at the grocery store.

My overall opinion

If you are looking for a homely stay with a great helpful host and in a budget accommodation and that too in a central convenient location, there is hardly any other guest house or budget lodging which can match with Sunflower. Although it is not a water front or beach front property, the advantages are plenty when you consider easy transportation, central location, dining and shopping convenience. Additionally, Tricia will help you with all her local knowledge and wisdom to make a perfect plan to make the most out of your stay in the island.
