Seymour's Pond Bermuda
Located in Southampton parish of Bermuda, Seymour's Pond is a nature reserve spanning 2.5 acres of area. If you are looking for a secluded and a romantic area in the parish, Seymour Pond can be the place for you. The nature reserve is a haven for different kinds of birds, many of which come here to nest.
This reserve is managed by Bermuda Audubon Society. They established the pond and the associated area as the nature reserve in 1963, one of their first ventures. As you go along the Middle road, the reserve is located at the Barnes' Corner near the junction of the South Road. The reserve has a large pond backed by dense forest area on a hillside. There are farm lands and more wooded areas towards the west.
The entire nature reserve has been established after acquiring several private estates. In fact the pond itself was divided into three private estates. Seymour Pond Reserve now forms a triangular open space and a lovely park between the Middle road, South Road and the waterfront on Little Sound.
If you cross the pond, you will see old
Bermuda cedars and pepper trees. Seymour Pond is a major habitat of many kinds of migratory and wintering waterfowl. It is also home to ducks, herons, egrets, sandpipers and kingfishers. You can also see moorhens, coots and pied billed grebes in the reserve.
However over the years, invasive Brazil pepper bushes and sheathed paspalum grass have been damaging the reserve and halved the size of the pond. The Society is raising funds to initiate a restoration of the reserve which is long due.
The reserve is open from sunrise to sunset. There is no admission fee. You can write to Bermuda Audubon Society (Email:
[email protected]) for any updates and further information.
