The Carriage House Bermuda
$$, British Cuisine
UPDATE August 2014: The original Carriage House Restaurant that opened its doors in 1970 had closed down after its owner George Hoermann died. It re-opened as
Polaris at Carriage House under a new ownership that retained much of the original ambience. Even that closed down and another restaurant
Tempest Bistro has replaced it.
Carriage House, located next to the harbor in St. George, serves nice British cuisine and seafood. The restaurant is located at the Somers Wharf area which has gone through extensive restoration. Earlier this used to be a warehouse and the walls inside have been made of bricks.
The views of the harbor from the outside patio or from a window side table is excellent. The restaurant is quite airy and with high ceiling it makes a pleasing atmosphere.
Both lunch and dinner are served here in Carriage House. The lunch menu typically includes burgers, salads, sandwiches and several entrees. Dinner menu is quite elaborate and the main fares include the prime ribs (that are cut to size of your choice by the table side) and rack of lamb. Other selections include lobster, veal scallopini, steak diane, pasta, fresh fish, and some nice vegetarian dishes.
Among seafood, pan-fried wahoo or rockfish in lemon-butter sauce are quite nice. The Bermuda Fish Chowder (a thick soup prepared out of ground fish head) is prepared well and is quite spicy and filling. The portions served here are quite good and are served hot.
There is a Sunday brunch buffet served in the restaurant which includes champagne. Often there is a live musical entertainment in the evenings. There is a party room available for up to 170 persons. For dinner, reservation is preferred.
